ABOUT AQUATIC GURU / B & H AQUATICS

B & H AQUATICS was formed six years ago by Dave Hirsh and Peter Bradley.

Dave Hirsh, a retired BT Manager & Electronics Engineer, and Peter Bradley, a Chartered Accountant, both have a passion for tropical fish and in particular, planted aquaria. Dave Hirsh has spent many years studying the German approach to aquatic culture and came to the conclusion that the German Dennerle system was the worlds leader and the most effective and foolproof method to successfully grow aquatic plants. If you can grow aquatic plants successfully, it follows from this that the fish will also thrive.

Dave set up his own tank some fifteen years ago. He used the Dennerle system, producing a high tech planted aquaria, credit to the success of the system, has never had to strip down the tank. This can be a problem with the more conventional aquarium set up. Over the years he has gained very valuable experience and has looked at methods of improving the equipment and making it more practical for the UK market. He is the technical side of the partnership and is able to give advice on the technicalities of the set up with regard to wiring, electrical supply, location, safety and so on. You will see an illustration, shown left of one of his tanks, which has been running for eight Years and is one of the tanks featured in Practical Fishkeeping.

Peter Bradley, like Dave Hirsh, has kept fish for many years and writes on aquatic plants and fish for Practical Fishkeeping. His tanks at his office have featured in articles in Practical Fishkeeping on how to design and set up tanks and also in opening shots for television. Both he and Dave have a mission to make fish keeping both enjoyable and easy. He has recently been out to the Amazon to study and catalogue the fish and plants for Practical Fishkeeping. He answers reader's queries and is currently working with schools to develop the hobby for the future.

Both of them have a passion for fish and plants and have searched the world for the best tanks and equipment to display them. Through Peters writing he has built up a relationship with leading plant nurseries, fish importers and manufacturers. This is helpful both for the technical input and access to the best from around the world.

The other part of the ethos is to make fish keeping enjoyable and easy. It is not only important that the tanks look visually stunning and the fish are healthy, they have to stay like this continually. We want people to look at their tanks and be inspired not just after they have been set up, but months and years later. The tanks and the set ups that we suggest for offices have been designed with easy maintenance in mind. However, to achieve these aims, much time and thought goes into the preparation and continuing maintenance.

We cannot over emphasise the importance of patience to successful fish keeping. The planted eco-system needs time to mature and come into balance. This, and good quality water, are the keys to successful fish-keeping. An aquarium is a living eco-system, which needs to be treated with tender loving care. Regular and efficient maintenance is vital to maintain the tanks in pristine condition. Both Peter and Dave have many years experience in tank maintenance. As their tanks are their best advertisement, we like to have the opportunity to maintain them regularly. As we specialise in planted aquaria, the maintenance involves making sure the water conditions are kept to an optimum. This involves using reverse osmosis water with the correct level of minerals and nutrients. Where tap water is used the nitrates and phosphates are removed by resin, which enables the water to maintain crystal clarity and enables the plants to thrive and grow. We want our clients to get the same enjoyment out of the hobby as we do and we will not compromise on quality or cost. However, we are obviously aware of market forces and ensure the service we provide is value for money.

If we receive the maintenance contract we do of course warrant the fish and plants we supply and will replace any losses - which is a very rare event due to the success of their systems.

We also run a telephone help-line call out service and consultancy.
